Additional scanners

In the Carpenter Library Digital Media and Collaborations Lab (DMCL), there are specialty scanners available for use, including a Zeta book scannerScanSnap, and two high quality Epson flatbed scanners. There are paper instructions for using each scanner available in the lab or you can ask a Carpenter staff member for support.

Choosing the right type of scanner

The right type of scanner depends on the material (i.e. books, photograph, or three dimensional object) and the quality of scan.

Zeta Book Scanner

Please note: You need a flash drive to use the Zeta book scanner. There are some available in the lab to borrow or feel free to ask a staff member in the space to borrow one.

The Zeta Scanner is most suitable for scanning delicate books and magazines. The bed of the scanner allows you to scan an open book in a two-page spread without putting pressure on the spine. To learn more about using this scanner, please see this online documentation.

ScanSnap Scanner

If you have a three dimensional object, such as a piece of jewelry or a rock, you can create a two dimensional scan using the ScanSnap Scanner. This scanner is also ideal for larger books or paper materials (anything larger than size A4 or 8 by 11 inches). To learn more about using this scanner, please see this online documentation.

Epson Flatbed Scanners

Note: The scans from these scanners are automatically read in through the Epson scanner software on DMCL lab computers. The lab computers also have AbbyyFineReader, which is an OCR (optimal character recognition) software that can make your document machine readable.

There are two Epson Flatbed Scanners available, the Epson V600 and the Epson V800. Both are flatbed scanners, but the V600 only scans in black and white, while the V800 gives a higher quality scan in color. To learn more about how to use these printers, see the Epson V600 documentation or the Epson V800 documentation.
