Ally is a tool integrated into Moodle that helps make course content more accessible. With Ally, you can easily convert course documents into accessible formats such as Immersive Reader, Audio, and Braille. Ally will automatically be available in all courses and can be used to convert any written course materials.
Before you start, you may need access to the following:
- be enrolled as an auditor or registered student in a Moodle course
Getting Started
Log In to Moodle: navigate to Moodle's login page and log in to your Moodle account.
Go to Your Course: from your Moodle dashboard, click on the course you want to view.
Download Alternative Formats
1. Find the Alternative Formats Icon: Look for a small “A” symbol next to files and resources in your course.
2. Access Formats: Click the icon next to a file or resource to see a list of alternative formats. Here's what each format offers:
HTML: Displays content in a clean, web-friendly layout, ideal for reading on various devices with easy navigation through headings and links.
Audio: Converts the text into an MP3 file, useful for auditory learners or for listening while multitasking.
ePub: A digital e-book format that can be read on e-readers or mobile devices, allowing for adjustable text size and a customizable reading experience.
Electronic Braille: Provides content in a Braille-compatible format for use with Braille displays.
BeeLine Reader: Uses color gradients to guide your eyes through the text, reducing eye strain and improving reading speed and comprehension. This can be particularly helpful for people with dyslexia or other reading challenges.
Immersive Reader: Provides a range of features including text-to-speech, adjustable text size, font choices, and background color options to enhance readability and comprehension. It also offers line focusing and syllable highlighting to support reading and understanding.
Note: You might not see every alternative format in your list of choices to download. The formats generated depend on the original content type.
Tips
Experiment with Formats: Test various formats to determine which one works best for you. For instance, you might try HTML format to make navigation easier, or BeeLine Reader to reduce reading fatigue.
Combine Formats: Use different formats for different types of content. For example, listen to audio versions during commutes and use ePub for in-depth reading sessions.
Organize Your Downloads: Download alternative formats for offline use, so you can access materials even without an internet connection.
Keep Files Organized: Store downloaded files in clearly labeled folders to easily and manage your study materials.
Provide feedback: If you encounter issues with access to any of the formats or features, provide feedback to your instructor.
