Zoom: Mirror an iPad in a classroom

This article explains how to use a Zoom meeting to wirelessly project from a tablet in a Bryn Mawr College classroom.

This is the easiest and most reliable way to "mirror" a tablet in a classroom and the only way to record both the tablet screen and room audio/video. LITS does not support or recommend alternatives: AirPlay and AirServer do not work on campus Wifi and "mirroring" apps are less reliable.

Before you begin, you may need:

Why would I do this?

You can connect a tablet to a classroom AV system to project from it just as you would a laptop, using the provided cable or your own adapter. You only need this Zoom workaround if:

  • You want to move around the classroom with the iPad.
  • You want to recorda screencastof the tablet AND audio or video from the room cameras and mics.

How do I do this?

This workaround takes advantage of the fact that Zoom allows the same account to connect to a meeting from multiple, different devices, such as a mobile device and a phone.

Start the Zoom meeting on the computer

Warning: If you want to record audio and video the room cameras/mics, you must use the podium computer.
  1. Log into the podium computer (or connect your laptop to the room AV system).
  2. Start projecting from the computer.
  3. Launch the Zoom desktop app.
  4. Start the Zoom meeting.
  5. If you are recording, click Record > Record to the cloud.
  6. If you are using the Zoom Whiteboard, click Whiteboards and choose New. (Whiteboards provide a blank screen you can write on and can optionally be shared during/after a meeting and annotated by others. See Getting Started with Zoom Whiteboard.)

Join the meeting from the tablet

  1. Launch the mobile Zoom app on the tablet.
  2. Jointhe Zoom meeting, selecting No audio to prevent audio feedback between your devices.
  3. Click Share content.
  4. Choose what you are sharing, typically:
    • Whiteboard -- Choose this option to display and annotate the meeting's Zoom Whiteboard
    • Screen -- Choose this option, then select Zoom from the Screen Broadcast menu and choose Start Broadcast, to display content or writing in other apps.
