Panopto: Add audio and video to a Moodle course

Use Moodle's integration with the Panopto lecture capture and video-streaming platform to add audio and video recordings to a Moodle course. All Moodle courses have a Panopto Course Tool in the top section that links to the Panopto folder for that course; click this video to view or add content to that folder.

Before you start, you will need:

  • a Instructor of record or Other editing teacher role in a Moodle course.

Use Panopto Course Tool to add content

The Panopto Course Tool allows you to add content to the Panopto folder associated with your Moodle course. Course participants can use click on the Panopto Course Tool to view these recordings, or access them through the Panopto block or any Panopto video assignment links you've added to the course.

Warning: If don't want students to access recordings through Panopto Course Tool, please hide it or move it to a hidden section. Deleting it will break Panopto's connection to your course.

Reuse Panopto content from another course

Direct links to Panopto recordings from a previous course won't work, as students in your current course won't have the right permissions to view them. Instead, copy the recordings from the previous course's Panopto folder to the current course's Panopto folder.

Batch copy all recordings from a single course

(Excluding Zoom recordings if desired.)

Copy content selectively or from multiple courses

Zoom recordings

Panopto automatically adds recordings of Zoom Meetings created through the Zoom activity in a Moodle course to its corresponding Panopto course folder (see Use the Zoom activity in Moodle). Otherwise, your Zoom Meeting recordings will be uploaded to your My Folder in Panopto, and you will need to move them to your Panopto course folder manually.

Create video assignments (optional)

Use this option to place recordings at specific points in your course and/or record grades for viewing or embedded quiz questions in Moodle. This option is most useful when you are designing a course in advance; if you record lecture captures or podcast episodes during a course, the Panopto block may be a better fit.

View videos in the Panopto block (optional)

The Panopto block in Moodle adds links to Panopto recordings as soon as they are uploaded to your Panopto course folder. It is the easiest way for students to find and view content an instructor adds during a course, such as lecture capture recordings or weekly podcasts. New recordings show up here as soon as they are uploaded to the Panopto course folder.
